Why is underlay important?

We all cherish the tranquillity and coziness of our homes, and the underlay that lies beneath our flooring can make a significant difference.

Regardless of whether you have hardwood, laminate, LVT or carpeting, Interfloor’s underlay solutions have the power to enhance your living space. They can improve the aesthetics, durability, and overall comfort of your flooring, making your home even more inviting.

The Best for Comfort

Enhanced Comfort

Interfloor's luxury carpet underlays are thick, dense and spongy, providing unrivalled underfoot cushioning. Our high-quality ranges enhance the elasticity of the flooring in your home. They absorb impacts and cushion your feet when you walk, meaning your carpets are incredibly comfortable. Our Tredaire premier range has been designed to provide you with the ultimate comfort, the PU foam offers a luxurious underfoot feel and contains air pockets for extra cushioning. It absorbs impact, reducing the strain on your joints and feet.

Improved Insulation

Underlays with high tog ratings provide extra insulation for your home. The thick, dense materials block cold air and prevent warm air from escaping. They retain heat and could help reduce your energy bills. Tog ratings are the thermal resistance of an underlay. The lower the tog rating of a product, the lower its thermal resistance is, and vice versa. The TOG rating indicates how effectively the underlay can retain and trap heat, which is crucial for maintaining a comfortable and energy-efficient indoor environment.

Noise Reduction

A carpeted floor with an underlay will act as a barrier to sound, helping you to enjoy a quieter home. For wood and laminate floors, a suitable underlay can reduce in-room noise by up to 30% and also reduce noise transmitted to rooms below.

Extended Flooring Lifespan

Our underlays act as shock absorbers, which prevents wear and tear, extending the lifetime of your carpet by up to 50%. Some underlays also protect your flooring against moisture from the subfloor to prevent damage from dampnessmoisture from the subfloor to prevent damage from dampness.

Improves Hygiene

Your underlay will act as a barrier to embedded dirt. Carpet underlay preserves the carpet pile, making it easier to clean and more hygienic. Now you’ve realised you want some brand-new underlay for your brand-new floor, but you don’t know what you want or where to even begin. There is a wide range of underlays available and it’s about finding what is best suited to you and your floor.

The different types of underlay

PU foam underlay

PU foam stands for polyurethane foam. It provides exceptional insulation, impact noise reduction and comfort. The foam in this underlay springs back to its original shape under load. It excels in standard domestic spaces due to the exceptional underfoot comfort.

Sponge rubber underlay

Sponge rubber underlays are the most traditional form of underlay and have remained a mainstay of the industry since the 1950s.

No other underlay feels like sponge rubber underfoot – it is extremely springy and comfortable to walk on, one of the main reasons for its popularity.  More flexible than PU foam, with excellent impact and airborne noise reduction, it can be used in a multitude of interior types. Sponge rubber underlay is also available in low tog varieties for use with underfloor heating systems.

Crumb rubber underlay

Crumb rubber underlays are exceptionally durable. They offer superb performance over their long lifespans with excellent impact and airborne noise reduction. Whilst they don’t offer the same level of comfort as a PU foam or sponge rubber underlay, their robust design provides effective protection in high-traffic and large areas.  It is the only type of underlay that offers 100% recovery under load.

What underlay do I need for underfloor heating?

Underfloor heating underlay is specifically designed to have a low tog rating so heat can flow easily into the room. We strongly recommend that an underlay with a maximum of 0.8tog is used. If you use a standard underlay, especially one made from PU foam, it will act more like a barrier and prevent the warmth from an underfloor heating system rising into the room, making it both inefficient and more expensive to run in the long term.

So why do I need new underlay?

Typically, carpets installed without a new underlay tend to have a shorter lifespan and are more susceptible to accelerated wear.  Your old underlay will not be in the best condition and therefore won’t provide the support and comfort needed for your new investment.

Underlay is an excellent shock absorber, so say goodbye to unwanted noise! Choosing a premium underlay like Tredaire premier can reduce noise up to 30%, whether that be footsteps or moving furniture.

Underlay will also save you money on your heating bills, by adding an extra layer of insulation.  Our underlay will keep the heat in, making your rooms warmer in the chilly seasons.
